WHO Faces Major Staff Reduction After US Financial Pullout

This global health organization disclosed intentions to reduce its staff by nearly a quarter – amounting to more than 2,000 jobs – before mid-2026.

Funding Crisis Triggers Major Reorganization

The decision comes after the US, previously the agency's largest contributor, pulled out funding earlier this period.

Washington had been contributing about eighteen percent of the organization's overall budget, creating a substantial financial shortfall.

Projected Workforce Reductions

Based on organizational projections, the staff is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in early 2025 to around seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.

This decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one posts comprises job cuts, employees retiring, and regular attrition.

"The past year has been one of the most difficult in WHO's existence, while we undertook a challenging but necessary journey of prioritization and realignment," commented the organization's director-general.

Budget Shortfall Persists

The Switzerland-headquartered body now confronts a budget gap of $1.06bn for the upcoming biennium, representing nearly a fourth of its required funding.

This amount marks an reduction from a prior estimated shortfall of 1.7 billion dollars noted in May.

Excluded Funding

These budget projections do not include an additional 1.1 billion dollars in expected funding from ongoing negotiations with various contributors.

The representative for the organization stated that the present unfunded portion of the budget is in fact lower than in previous years, crediting this to multiple reasons:

  • Reduced overall budget size
  • The launch of a fresh donor outreach campaign
  • An increase in participating countries' mandatory contributions

The restructuring initiative is currently approaching its completion, allowing the organization to progress with a reshaped structure.
